Penrose & Horwood Paiges Almshouses

Welcome to our collection of Almshouses at Penrose and Horwood Paige’s run by Barnstaple Almshouses.

Our charity was established in the 1800’s for the benefit of people living within the borough of Barnstaple and surrounding five mile radius. We provide homes in peaceful surroundings, ensuring a haven, refuge and a supportive community for those in need which may not be recognised by housing authorities or social services.

Barnstaple Almshouses has twenty eight Almshouses within two sites in Barnstaple : Horwood Paiges in Church Lane, in the centre of the town, next to Saint Peter’s and Saint Mary Magdalene’s Church, has four flats and four houses. Penrose in Litchdon Street has four flats and sixteen houses arranged in a cobbled quadrangle with its own meeting room, chapel and set of allotments. Each of our almshouses are unique and offers one bedroom accommodation with a bathroom, kitchen and sitting room for single occupants or couples.

In addition to the Almshouses our charity manages a small fund established to provide grants for apprentices, educational purposes or relief for those in need. For more information about these grants please refer to the Relief Charitable Fund.

We are members of The Almshouse Association and are registered with the Charity Commission.
